Early rounds reward clarity. Students should understand constraints (rules, deadlines, restrictions) before they optimize for preference (dream schools, financial considerations, athletic recruitment).

Start by mapping each early option on the list: binding vs. non-binding, what can be added later, and how the list grade changes if an early school is categorized as reach. That keeps the conversation grounded when emotions run high.

The most durable strategy combines a conservative early plan with a balanced regular list — so students are not forced to chase risky categorizations in November to feel whole.
